The inner and outer walls of our long row of semi-detached houses were replaced about 20 years ago due to rotted ties. Our walls, and those of our attached neighbour's walls, have "vents" (missing mortar between adjoining bricks) 4 courses above the top of the downstairs windows, spaced every 4 bricks around the entire exterior wall. They are also in the course directly above the upstairs windows, also spaced every 4 bricks. But the semi-detached houses either side of our do not have any at all, and would have been rebuilt during the same period. I questioned this, and was told it was "down to the brikkie doing the job".

Some of them.perps look a lot bigger than 10mm I want to see every joint 10mm Im not q bricky but build my own double garage and every single joint is 10mm but im yet to wall or house built by a bricky with all perps not obviously bigger or smaller than 10 mm

What kind of person can do such a bad job and have any self respect ? Why are they allowed to get away with it ? Is there some way of spotting these people ?

More shocking than the quality of the finish is the medieval technology employed to construct those houses. I'm from Eastern Europe, and the new builds there are light years ahead of the UK. I don't understand British resistance to progress.

It's alright slagging off the brickwork but none of you actually understand why it is a different colour. The lower part was built ages ago and left while the rest of the house got built, once that scaffold came down, the garage could be finished. However it would have been upto 6 months later in different weather conditions, leading to the mortar drying to a different colour and that is all that has caused this, just a difference in the speed at which the mortar has dried out.

If you are considering a new build and it is currently being constructed you can request to view the property before it's completed. This is a great time to ask the builders questions, not the salesperson. One thing to bear in mind, builders are under pressure to get homes up as fast as possible, even toilet time means less pay so if you're on site in your property look for any damp patches on the floor and walls because that's where builders have pissed.

I can't understand why this is continuing cow boy workmanship and they are getting aware with it wholesale. My daughter bought a Taylor Wimpy new build it was shocking I talked to site manager who basically couldn't give a shit about all the issues. I left a review on trust pilot saying avoid this company like the plague. It boils me that they throw houses up but no pride in workmanship its a shame we have to accept this as what seems to be standard now.

I on site now as a bricklayer, I ran my own building business for 40 years (I’m 61) , the workmanship is diabolical, if you try and do a decent job you are the odd one out . Don’t buy a new build it’s like buying a car built by children

When tradesmen are getting absolutely shocking prices and have to work like fuck using out of date and damaged materials these are the results.

Whilst I appreciate you pick up the problems and issues with these new builds, I still can't get away from the fact that you are also contributing to these problems. Why don't you tell people what developers these are? That would stop people parting with their hard earned cash buying them which would in turn force the developers to up the standard to get people to buy them. But you wont tell people because it keeps you in a job, makes you just as bad as them!!

I am a retired construction worker, I have seen it all and would advise every potential house buyer to avoid all property built within the last 15 years, they are ALL shit

Every new build site is like this now, no exception. As a delivery driver I regularly drive through new build areas. The “finished” houses look like a mess, missing pavement/driveways, brickwork in terrible condition, parts hanging off and that’s just on the outside. It’s all about getting them up as fast and cheaply as possible. Then sell a house they built for 100k for 300k. They may fix the issues after it’s sold or in most cases not. Don’t buy new builds ever.

Ok, people, I have just spoken to Bloor sales person and I have been told that all Bloor developments around the country have grounds management fees, and I have been told these fees rise with inflation and it is some kind of management trust that sets them, every year. I have been told that most of new homes developers around the country have these grounds management fees imposed on buyers, and buyers are basically at the mercy of these management trusts, as how much these management fees will go up next year, over the next 10 year, 20, 30. Count me out of buying within new developments then
